Peer Mediation

PEER MEDIATION

Advisor:  Mrs. Niedel (k.niedel@schoolsofwestfield.org, Guidance)

Peer Mediation meets on Wednesdays after school until 3:30 in Room 117.  Students, who wish to become peer mediators, receive the training in the beginning part of the year and then go on to practice the learned skills  throughout the year.   These skills assist other students, who request a mediation as they seek  a resolution to a dispute.  The mediators learn how to encourage constructive communication, as they help  students in a conflict take responsibility for their actions, and to clarify their needs and feelings.  The Peer Mediators are a neutral third party in the resolution process.  The goal is for the mediators to help the students in conflict arrive at an agreement, that can be written down and signed and agreed upon by the people in conflict.   These skills are subsequently used by people all through their lives in all kinds of situations.
